Supporting Our Priests
If we do nothing else to support our shepherds, let us refrain from subjective criticism.*
Most priests will be the first to say that the grace of ordination does not include canonization, and that priests struggle with their own human imperfections and shortcomings.
Whether it’s for that homily that went too long, the time they were less than charitable on a bad day, or some other issue, let us make every effort to extend forgiveness, patience, and charity to the men from whom we receive the Sacraments of God.
*In exhorting patience with human failings in our shepherds, we in no way mean to imply tolerance for the horrendous crimes of clergy abuse. Unreported instances of abuse should be directed to civil authorities, and if you or a loved one are a survivor of clergy abuse, please be assured of our prayers.
